Choosing the Right Shingles for Fayette and Clayton County
Walking into a roofing supplier and looking at a shingle sample board can be overwhelming. Multiple product lines, different warranties, a range of prices. This guide cuts through the complexity and identifies what actually matters for homeowners near West Union and Elkader when choosing roofing shingles.
Three-Tab Shingles
Three-tab shingles are the thinner, flat shingle that was the residential standard for decades. They are still available and still the cheapest option. However, for new roofing in West Union and Elkader, we do not recommend three-tab shingles as a primary choice. They are less durable, more susceptible to wind uplift, and provide a flat appearance that looks dated compared to architectural options. Their lower upfront cost does not offset their shorter lifespan and lower wind resistance.
Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles
Architectural shingles are the current standard for residential roofing in Northeast Iowa. They are thicker, have a dimensional appearance that mimics cedar shake, and are significantly more wind and impact resistant than three-tab shingles. Quality architectural shingles are available in 30-year and lifetime warranty products — we recommend at least 30-year material for any new roof installation in Fayette or Clayton County.
Impact-Resistant Shingles
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are worth considering for homes near West Union and Elkader that have experienced repeated hail damage. They qualify for insurance discounts with many carriers and deliver meaningfully better resistance to hail impact than standard architectural shingles. The cost premium is 20 to 30 percent over standard architectural, but the insurance savings can offset that over time.
