What to Do After a Storm Damages Your Roof

Northeast Iowa's severe weather season — spring and summer thunderstorms, occasional straight-line wind events, and hail — puts roofs under stress every year. When a storm damages your roof near Decorah, Dubuque, or anywhere in the region, the right response sequence matters. Here is what to do.

Immediate Assessment

After a storm, inspect your roof from the ground with binoculars if possible. Look for missing shingles, visibly damaged areas, lifted ridge cap, and debris impact damage. Check your attic for daylight or fresh water entry. Document everything with photos before anything is repaired — this is important for insurance claims.

Do not go on the roof yourself if you are not experienced and equipped. A damaged wet roof is a fall hazard. Wait for a qualified contractor to do the physical inspection.

Temporary Protection

If your roof has significant damage that is allowing water entry, temporary protection — tarping the affected area — prevents interior damage until permanent repairs can be made. We can provide emergency tarping for active-leak situations in Northeast Iowa.

Insurance Claims

If the storm damage is significant enough for an insurance claim, contact your insurance company promptly and request an adjuster inspection. Get at least two contractor estimates before agreeing to the insurance settlement amount. Some storm damage — particularly hail damage that is not immediately visible — is easy for a homeowner to underestimate but clear to a contractor who inspects regularly.

Repair vs Replacement

Not all storm damage warrants a full roof replacement. Isolated shingle damage can often be repaired affordably. Widespread hail or wind damage that affects the majority of a roof surface typically warrants replacement, especially on roofs that are more than 10 to 15 years old. We give honest assessments — we will tell you when repair is the right answer, not just push for replacement.
